How to tell a good SEO.

So if their are so many sleazy SEO out their, how do you tell them from the good ones.

1. A good SEO won't give you a quote before they know all the details about your website and what results you want to achieve, unless that quote is for at least multiple $10,000.
2. A good SEO will usually talk in words you understand, rather than try to boggle you with geekspeak.
3. A good SEO will probably ask you your budget, and work within that budget.
4. A good SEO will ask you a lot of questions, you may think some questions are odd, but the less guesswork a SEO has to do the more likely you are to get a good job.
5. A good SEO will invite you to ring them to discuss your needs. Although a lot of work from home's myself included, don't like to give out their home address, honest people are quite happy to give out their phone numbers... ring them, at least once to confirm that the number they gave is the correct one. A landline number is perferable over a cell phone one.
6. A good SEO will never make rash promises, like yes I can get you to #1 position especially before they have researched the phrases you are after.
7. A good SEO will always ask if they can have access to the geeky side of a website, before they give you a quote, remeber this, before you get a quote, you SEO should know if they can have access to the backend of the website... this doesn't mean that they have to be able to access it, but if they can't the SEO work that has to be done is quite different, much more time consuming so will cost more, or the type of work they do is the sleazy type, that can be turned off if you stop paying the monthly SEO fee, that might not have been mentioned in the orginal quote.
8. A good SEO will always be happy to answer your questions, and will be happy for you to question them, I have had a client say they were going to contact someone that knew SEO, I gave them all my contact details to pass onto their friend. Good SEO have nothing to hide about their work.
SEO isn't a one off thing that can be done, that works the same with every website, sure there are some things that every website needs, but each website, in my experience is unique, even two website selling the same thing.
SEO is an ongoing process, and although some SEO make one charge which includes the ongoing work, if you see or hear an SEO saying, your site will take a week or a month to do then be weary.

Ask your SEO what they are going to do to your website, then contact someone like me, offer to pay me $100 to look over their list, I promise you the $100 you pay me will be the best money you ever spend. Cause if there's something sleazy in there, I'll pick them up on it. Often it's the way something is worded, not what it says thats the tip off. And very often people that don't speak you native lauguage will take advantage of this.

How Many Links do I need? SEO Tip

A big problem with a lot of people that are trying to save money, and do their own SEO is they see something, like "you need links", and run with it, without actually knowing what is required.

For the record, you need links to your website, not neccessarily from your website. The problem comes with how do you do this.

And just any links to your website doesn't work either, they have to be from specific pages on specific sites.

I know so many of my clients have complained to me, I have links, and looking at their websites these links go out to different websites, often the website will be related to their website, which is great for the website they have linked to, but actually makes their own website weaker, if their aren't websites like the ones they are linking to, linking back to them.....

As you can see just from what I have written so far, it's more complicated than "you need links", and any good SEO has already made the mistakes you are making, and knows the best way to get links,
sure some SEO's cheat, actually a lot of SEO's cheat, and will and take your money, and still give you the wrong type of links, becuase the right type of links are very hard to find.

Hard work or time consuming work, although some SEO's are willing to do the work on their own sites, so they rank well in search engines, won't do the work on your site, especially not for the relatively small amount of money they charge for their SEO services.

A good SEO is also as hard to find as honest carsales man, but we are out there. I'll write another post, explaining how to disearn a good seo.

How Much should SEO cost, what some people charge for their SEO services

How much does SEO cost?

This is a really hard question to answer, it's a bit like asking how much a car costs, it just depends, one of the first considerations is how big is the site, what is it selling.

And one of the first questions I reply to this "how much" question with, is what is your budget? Then I ask how many visitors they would like to their website each month.

When I client tells me how much their budget is, and how many clients they are wanting to their website each I can give them a few options.

For a low budget generally speaking though, often $500 plus $1 per each visitor per month is a good way of working it out. This works at the lower end of the scale anyway, so if a client is looking only looking at another 1000 visitors a month, then often $1500 will be a good starting point one of the SEO clients I have has paid $2500 on SEO over 2 years and is getting an extra 7000 visitors per month, so this simple sum doesn't always work. Once you start looking at 10's of thousands of new visitors a month, the budget per visitors drops dramatically, getting visitors to a website initially is the hardest task, getting more visitors in general isn't that time consuming.

I have an SEO client that I've just started talking about SEO on her website, she has a budget of $30,000 over the next year, and if wanting to increase her website visitors to 250,000 per month. The client has an global art gallery online, so generating plenty of visitors should be easy enough. A lot of time will be spent link building, and building the pagerank of a lot of the internal pages, I have 4 clients with artist websites. I only do minimal work for them, but have always found linkbuilding easy for these site.

I was recently reading a blog for an SEO Who always quoted $50,000 then $5000 per page for SEO work, looking at what he did when doing SEO on a website, the sites he did seo for, they were doing ok, but nothing that special, they were ranking between 7th and 9th on page #1 of google, so paying more for SEO, doesn't mean you will get better results, if just means your SEO doesn't work with people on smaller budgets, personally I would perfer have my site ranking higher for more phrases, than to be able to say, I spent $70.000 on SEO, I guess though that there is a certain amount of snob value in saying that huh.

Is SEO really necessary, do I have to have SEO

I often get asked if SEO is really necessary, and the quick answer is no, it isn't essential if you aren't trying to make money or sales for your business.

If you spend your whole day online, posting in forums, writting responses in blogs, writting articles, emailing a lot of people, SEO isn't strickly necessary, especially if you aren't selling anything.

However, and this is a big however, if you are wanting to get more visitors to your website, want to make sales or increase sales, and don't have time to sit all day and everyday at the computer, finding ways to get people to your website, then SEO will definately need to be part of your marketing plan.

Also, unless you have some basic SEO skills in the first place, all the time spent online posting etc will be lost within about a year, often forums will prune their posts, so any posts you did make will be either lost in the archives, or pruned (cut out) of forums and blogs. So it's well worthwhile spending about 80 to 100 hours learning the basics of SEO.....

When you think about spending 90 hours learning some SEO basics, and then say 8 hours a day online putting those SEO skills into practise, you soon see that hiring an SEO like Me isn't such a bad option. Even if you only consider your time as being worth $25 an hour, the time you take to learn Basic SEO as 90 hours, you have already lost $2250. If you invested that same $2250 on SEO you would find your website ranking a lot better in search engines.

And thats only the time you would have spent learning about SEO, then comes the really hard bit, actually putting what you have learnt into practice, yet if you had of invested in my SEO Services, you would already be well on the way to actually making the money.

How do I get more sales from my website

I get asked so often, how do I get more sales, how can I make money from my website, why doesn't anyone want to buy stuff off my website, why aren't I getting any orders.

The answer can be several things, but most often the answer is, beuase you need more visitors to your wbesite.

One client said once, well I get over 100 people a month to my site yet no sales.

I'm sorry, but 100 visitors a month would mean about 1 sale every two years. You need thousands of visitors each month to get reguar sales.

Theres no way you can send thousands of visitors to your website each month, you simply don't have the time, you need your website to be found in search engines for the sorts of things that people might search for.

Search engines are the ONLY way to get thousands of visitors to your website each and every month.

That same client I spoke about above, now get's between 9 and 11,000 visitors to her website every month, and is making regular sales.

An investment in my SEO services, of just over $2000 over a period of 24 months has resulted in the increase in visitors.

Too many orders, please close my website

I had a Christmas bonus today, I had a frantic email today from a client I did SEO for in September, asking me to Stop doing SEO, close her site, do something, she's been unindated with orders and she can't keep up.

This client owns a gift box website, which was build on an oscommerce ecommerce website.

The site is about 3 years old, and last year only had less than 5 christmas orders, after starting SEO in September of this year, she has had a steady increase in sales, until 2 weeks ago, when everything went insane, she has sold her whole stock she brought for Christmas and the first few months of the new year, plus extra products she's brought in the last week, now she's so far behind with orders, she and her staff just can't cope......

What a lovely christmas pressent for me, It's so good to hear my SEO work is working too well.

Duplicate content why it doesn't work

Many website owners, find it hard and time consuming to find linking partners, so decide on another option, which is creating many websites, and then linking them all to each other. This sounds like a good idea, and it would be good idea if each site had different content.

Creating new websites with new content is very time consuming, and although we did it, we started out with www.canzdesign.com then found we were getting too many hints and tips, so decided to open a subdomain called Hobit's hints, the the SEo was taking over the site, so we created SEObyCanz then of course there is this blog, and a couple of other blogs, all these sites have different content, and thats the way it should be.

However most people don't want to spend the time creating new websites, and will just buy several domain names, and but the same site up, just under a different name, one client we had, had over 30 domain names, and the exact same site, he didn't even bother to change the SEO, or the banner on the site. His thinking was, all those sites all pointing to his one main site would make it rank so much better.....

Let me tell you, google, and other search engines aren't stupid, if they are at a site, and go to another site that is all the exact same, even the images are the exact same size, they aren't going to see that as a new site.

If you think it might be worth having duplicate sites or several sites then be warned, duplicate sites will not rank highly, only the site google see's as the original will do well. And if you have a main site, and then give it a makeover, google will see that site as a site with New content, and then rank one of your older sites as the main site.

You are by fair better to devide your site into subdomains, each subdomain linking to the other subdomain and the main domain.

EG: we have just accepted a contract for a site selling Vegetarian Shoes. Once the site is up and running, I would suggest to the owner, that if they wanted to say have a section for articles about vegetarian life, that she make a subdomainm then later is she wanted vegetarian reciepes, add another subdomain, then another for other vegetarian products, this way they can be all linked to each other, and in this way build up a good ranking. Of course this is a lot of work, but lets face it websites, or successful website are a lot of work. It's not just a case of building a website, and making millions.

Black Hat SEO vs Sleazy SEO

There’s another type of SEO, which is called blackhat SEO, if the owner knows it's going on, and sleazy SEO if the website owner doesn't know about it.

Blackhat SEO is SEO that works, unless Google finds out you are doing it, but is considered cheating. This site I talk about has been doing it for at least 5 years that I know about and has never changed the page.

The "blackhat SEO" technique I'm talking about is when someone adds keywords or keyphrases that are the same colour as the background to a page, take a look at the front page of this site

When the page opens, do a control A on your keyboard which means "select all" and see all those keywords down each side of the page? That when you unselect aren't visible , this is a blackhat SEO technique that is often used to help a site rank better for a particular or several keywords or phrases.

I first come across this website when I was doing SEO on our photo bank, as I couldn't understand why it was doing so well for a particular phrase that I was trying to do well in too.
I have heard that if Google becomes aware of a site doing this it will be blacklisted, I have never known of a case where this has happened, but it has been reported several times on forums, of course once the site is gone, it's too late to see it lol.

There are better ways that are called "whitehat SEO" of getting a site ranking well that aren't cheating, but I thought I would show you techniques that are used by some SEO's, that could possibly get a site taken out of search engines, and where the owner of the website didn't even know it was happening.

So if you have had SEO done on your site, it pays to do this little check hopefully before you pay your SEO, and be warned if your SEO has done this, as - in all probability - they have used other blackhat techniques that may get your site banned.

Learning SEO the hard way...

I had someone track me down through this blog today, and ask me how I learnt about SEO, and did I have any certificates to prove how good I was. (i think he doubted me)

Anyway, no. I didn’t learn SEO from a school, I learnt it by trial and error, but thought you might be interested to know about my humble beginnings.

I first started learning about SEO almost 7 years ago, before I knew it had a name.

We owned a Stock Photography Bank, and I noticed that if words were repeated on a page several times, that that page was like to appear higher in search engine results, the more times the word was repeated the higher it would appear in search engine results.

Through my interest, and inquistive nature, I realised if the title of the webpage - the bit that shows at on the top bar of your browser - had the same keywords, the page didn’t need to have the word repeated so many times and yet it would still appear high, and sometimes higher, in search engines.

Time went on, and I learnt how to read the code that makes up any webpage, and found there were other places that, if the keywords were repeated, that the page would rank even better in search engines.

Through applying what I learnt, and I have to admit making a few mistakes, I managed to get our Stock Photo Bank, ranking right up on page one of Google, often higher than the world’s largest stock photo banks like Corbis and Getty.

Once I saw this happening I was hooked. I found out about website statistics, and how to find out how many people were visiting my website, where they were coming from, what browsers they used, even what time of day they visited most, and then noticed how visitors rose at the same time my website started ranking well, and that each change I made that increased our site visablity, increased the amount of visitors. Now I was an utter addict.

I also found that changing the words slightly on every page, I could get the website listing higher for many different search.

Whats this SEO thing?
Somewhere about here, someone told me about SEO, and how it sounded like pretty much like what I was doing.

I joined a few forums, and mailing lists (about 50 different things). And yes, that's what I had been doing. I found though that many of the SEO big wigs were giving people information of how to do things, and the information wasn't true. It sounded good, but from experience I knew better ways of doing it.

I started adding my comments to posts and got a few people's dander up: who was I, an uneducated hick from New Zealand of all places, telling them what to do... I didn't tell anyone what to do, I just suggested different ways.... and when I pointed out the SEO was so new, it was, and still is hard to get an education from anywhere, I was barred from a forum.

I still belong to a few forums, that aren't owned by SEO gurus, but usually withhold my comments now or at least the ones I make on forums. Anyway back then....

I had the coder that kept the photo gallery running, and had him add SEO features, and so were the beginnings of a SEF CMS. I didn’t know then 6 years later I would eventually build a Search Engine Friendly, Content Management System.

We started building website for other people. And I applied what I knew to their sites, not realizing others could see the skills I had. Then someone wrote to me, about our stock photo bank, and asked why they always saw it in search engines, for every search they ever did for photos and stock photos. He asked me if i could do the same thing with his site, and offered me $1000.... wow this was cool, getting paid for something I would have done for free!

And so it went, I wouldn’t and won’t take a job unless I knew I could make a difference, and until recently websites that were database driven were a challenge I couldn’t rise to - I didn’t know how to edit codes for these sites, as it was very different to sites that where html.

Recently I met a coder, who is now working for me regularly, that will add coding to database driven website, opening up a whole new world be me, so now I can do SEO on any website I’m presented with.

To date I have done SEO on over different 40 websites, and am currently working on 7 sites, I have a personal limit of 10 sites at a time, as I like to give each site the time it deserves.

I now have 4 people working for me, doing the more time consuming aspects of SEO’s like directory submissions, and finding linking partners, but I always do the important work myself as I like to know exactly what's going on.

I understand that people coming to me for my services are in need of help, and often wonder if the investment I’m asking them to make will be worthwhile, when I know they have tried so many other things, and are dubious about this working. The least I can do is make sure it works, and the only way to do that is to do the work myself.

I have noticed that other people I employ to work for me, just don’t have the instinct or gut feelings that are needed to be an SEO, and while they are happy to do the work, they just can’t see how important it is, that any payment they may get must bring results to the person that paid them.

My goal with SEO is to earn $2000USD a month, and with up to 10 smaller business paying me $200 a month on average, this is obtainable. Sure I should charge more than what I do, but to be quite honest, I don’t want to earn that $2000 and more from just one big company, but at the rate I should charge, I would only be working 20 hours a month.

I live on the computer, so could do 20 hours work in one sitting, what would I do for the rest of the month? I’d far rather help out 10 smaller businesses, and work for less, and give those 10 clients more results than they expect.

Why the hedgehog mascot? Hedgehogs are inquisitive, and nose into every nook and cranny, looking for interesting stuff to eat, they have very big mouths, and are really good at spitting out what they don't like.... that pretty much sums me up, I look around for all sorts of information and I devour anything that SEO related and spit out the junk.

Sleazy SEO's Tricks 2

This story is an all-too-common one.

Making the google page rank the highest it can be is the hardest job for an SEO to do. It takes many many hours of work. And the higher the page rank is, the higher the website will rank for popular keywords.

I have seen many many SEO's that have made deals with the owners of large websites with High Page ranks, that allow the SEO can add links to their clients website, passing the high Pagerank along the SEO's client. The owners of the big sites can get paid upwards of $800 a month for these links which is pretty good money, when you think that they could have 10 or 20 different links from the same SEO.

Anyway, these same SEO's charge many thousands of dollars to their clients to first raise their Page Rank, when all they did was add the link to say 20 pages of the high ranking website, then $2000-4000 each month to upkeep the SEO for the site.

The problem comes when the website owner doesn't want to keep paying the $2000-4000 then suddenly the links are gone from the high ranking website, the page rank of the website drops, and suddenly they can't find their website in search engines.

What choice does the website owner have but to go back to the SEO, who has by then raised their prices, and ask them to take them back on as clients. I have talked to people of SEO forums that have spent 30-40 thousand dollars in the past 12 months, just getting the SEO to take them back on as clients.

When I do SEO for a client, I make sure that the work I do will last for years after I stop doing the SEO. The only time they might lose a position is when a website selling the exact same thing get's there website SEO'ed. I have two sites that sell gemstones that I do SEO for and I make sure they will both get high ranking for different keyphrases, so they don't conpete with each other.

It would be very easy to do SEO for 20 or so sites that have the exact same product, and not have them competing in search engines.

Sleazy SEO's tricks 1

I thought I would share some of the sleazy tricks I have known some SEO's to do.

The first one I got really angry when I saw it, was an add-on a hire a cheap labour website, the add said something like.

I need several people to click on links to websites, you will be give a webpage with a list of links, all you need to do, is go to the page, click on the list of links, close the page, open it again and click on the list of links, and get paid 1 cents for each click...later in the add it said you could site and click on links all day it you wanted too, and told you how much you could earn in 10 hours. which was something like $10 a day.

I was intrigued, and decided to find out about the people who wrote the advert, they were a biggish SEO company.

Even more interested I applied for the job, and found out that this page with links, had been designed so every time it opened it would desguise the IP address of the person clicking, so each time the clicks were done, they looked like they were coming from a new person, in a different country.

I complained, but they said they had over 50 people from India that were happy to earn $10 a day, and if I didn't want to that was fine..... I wished later that I had gotten that list of link and contacted the website owners, to show them how all the new visitors their website was getting weren't real, but of course hindsight is a fine thing.

I've done a lot of basic SEO on this site, and while building it, sent the coder almost mad with wanting SEO features built into the site. The site is built on our on SEF CMS,(Search Engine Friendly, Content Managment System) which we have been building for a few years now and, with some time at hand, we're going to market it as it's finished and ready to sell!!! So two major milestones at pretty much the same time.

Also since we finished working on the site above last night, we are working on my own new website SEObyCanz, and should have enough done to have it online in a couple of days. So many things happening at once.

Accomodation websites, A study of who searches for what

What people search for looking for accommodation website?

I have been doing research for an SEO job I will be doing shortly for RainbowTourism.com and found some interesting results.

You would think - or I did - that hotel and motel would rank the highest for searches for accommodation. WRONG...

Although hotel outranks everything I searched for,(and I searched for 20 different types of accommodation) motel was actually the least searched for, often as little as or less than Bed and Breakfast. The general results were as below, although Resort and Inn swapped places depending on what county was being analysed.

Building a new database SEF CMS website for Rainbow Tourism dot com

For the past 3 months we have been building a database driven SEO friendly Gay Tourism Directory. The site will go live quite soon, lin a few hours more than likely.

It's been a hard slog, with many 24, 26, 48 and 50 (and the longest ever in one block of time 52.30) hours on line. Multiply that by 2 for both Kym and I and you have a heck of a lot of work being done, but looking at the site it has been worth it. The site looks awesome, even though there's heaps more work to be done, it will never stop growing.

I'm also going to be taking care of the Accommodation, Tourist Attraction, and Hire Car listings, first adding the gay owned-and-operated, or gay friendly listings to the Seekom Secure Online Booking System, then to the Gay and Lesbian Tourism Directory itself.

We managed to make every page name the exact same as it was on the old site, so there will be no broken links when the domain name points to it.

This new site is so SEO friendly, it won't need links from anywhere else LOL... of course it will but the site which is built on our own SEF(Search Engine Friendly) CMS is really something very Special.

We were building the SEF CMS when the Rainbow Tourism job came in, so the building of the two in parallel was perfect timing. You really should take a look!

Optimizing a Large E-commerce Website for Google

The site sells gemstones; the average price for one gemstone is around $120.

When this client first came to us, they had had a website for 2 years, and
had not had a single sale.

We also did some basic SEO work on the site as we were building it and built the site on a CMS so the client could add and change new products herself.

In November 06, I did 3 hours SEO work on the site, which resulted in an increase of 1200 new visitors that month. It could be said that Nov - Dec would attract more visitors anyway, however that wasn't the case the year before.

Since the New Year 07 I have been doing just 2 hours a month, and visitors have increased by almost 1000 that month by May 07.

Sales have increased threefold since January 06 at a steady rate.

In early March I submitted this sites details to 300 directory's since this is the type of site that people would look for in directory's.

Since the submission were all free, none with reciprocal links, the submissions were not accepted immediately, but directories always check the sites before acceptance them so the numbers increased artificially for that month.

April the submissions started being accepted, and I attribute some of May's visitors to those directory listings. April being Tax month, is historically a bad month for this and many other none essential products websites. If you look at the image to the right you will see the statistics for this site from Oct 06 to Oct 07.


But just looking at these statistics, you can see that the increase in hours and the directory submission has definitely paid off. 11220 Visitors in Oct 07

E-commerce websites, be available to your customers

Online Availablity... Check your emails twice a day
This post might seem silly to some people, but we have come across accommodation websites that reply to enquiries about availablity of rooms up to 2 weeks after we email them, with the excuse that "we don't get a chance to check our email very often."

Get real! If you have a website, then turn your computer on, login and download your email twice a day, it will take 5 minutes each time. And check your spam bin. An email from someone new emailing you will often end up in the spam bin, so check the spam bin or folder each day and empty it.. for hints on how to combat spam look there.

Answer dumb questions. Many is the time a polite response to a dumb question has brought me work. Remember the question only seems dumb because you know the answer, remember back to the time when you didn't know, how would you have felt if you received a polite reply to a question you asked? And how you would have felt if the answer had been curt or rude? Politeness costs nothing, and leave the receiver feeling respected.

I just checked the word boxes and it's at #6 on page 1 of google.co.nz "the Web" search and #8 on page 1 for "Search New Zealand"

That's darn good, I'm so good... hehehe.... that particular keyword wasn't anywhere in the first 1000 results when I started, and ranking so well for a single keyword is really good. And of course you know about all the keyphrases that are at at #1

I've done some more work on that word today, so it should come up a little higher yet. I will be interested to see where your site is by April next year as well.

Have you ever noticed that some websites will work as it were when you put the www in front of the url, and yet go to an page not found, when the www isn't there.... or vise versa?

If you are unlucky enough to have this problem, just get in touch with the company thats hosts your website, and ask them to change the settings so both url's work. It's just a setting in the control panel, which would take only 5 minutes to change.

You may not think it's a problem, but at a recently internet users conference I attended, they said a large % of internet uses, don't think to do something like that, and that if a webpage doesn't show, they will just got to another website. I have to admit, I do know about this, and only now and again, I will think to do it, so it's worth getting fixed.

Unless you have a very big website (hundreds or thousands of pages) you shouldn't be paying more than $20 a month for hosting, more like $10 or less, and if you are only paying $5 or $10 a month your host may make a charge to change it but it's unlikely and as i said it only takes a couple of minutes to do.

Most of our website hosting clients only pay $10 a month, we set that particular setting when we first start hosting a website, but would change something like this for free.

How directory listings work in increasing your visitors.

To give an example of how directory listings work, to get people seeing your link, and visiting your site

I have a website I have done SEO work for for over three years. It's a relatively small e-commerce website selling gemstones and jewelery. www.gemhunters.com.au up until April this year I have only done onsite optimisation, not a lot of work, only a couple of hundred dollars a every 3 or 5 months, and her visitors where sitting around the 5000 to 5700 a month.

At the end of April 07 her website stats said she had 5009 visitors (tax month so visitors were down)

I stopped doing any onsite optimization, I started submitting her site to directory's, the owner
would only invest enough to do 100 submissions at a time, at the end of Sept 07 she had 9542
visitors. so she averaging even for her best month before I started submissions, and increase
of almost 4000 more visitors a month.

All up this client has spent just a little under $3000 on SEO and is getting as I said just over 9500 visitors last month.

The beauty of the SEO I do is if I stopped doing any SEO on her site right this minute, she would carry on getting about the same number of visitors, next month, next year, in 5 years. Sure it
would change a little on a monthly basis, but generally her monthly visitors would stay in the 7500 - 11000 per month range, as long as she keeps replacing the sold stock.

Let face it, in the general scheme of things, $3000 is peanuts,(and that was mates rates) but it really makes you wonder what would have happened if she had invested twice that amount of
money, don't you think?

I mean gemstones is a relatively small niche market, smaller than the gay market. I just did a search for a comparison of how many people searched for gay in relation to three gem related keywords, and the three gem words don't even rank.

Rainbow Tourism shaping up.

Almost a month ago, I wrote about the website we are building for Rainbow Tourism, it's a directory of gay friendly places to stay, well the site isn't quite live yet, but it's getting close now, only about 2 weeks to launch date.

A lot of things have happened in less than a month with this business relationship with Rainbow Tourism, besides making this site dynamic and a CMS, (means the owner of the site can make webpages, and doesn't have to know anything about webdesign) now all the listings are searchable, and the site is more manageable generally.

Though doing this project, we have met a wonderful American programmer/coder called Andrew, we started out with an Indian company doing the site, but things didn't work out, and we found Andrew, who can do any coding that we can't do, and the bonus is he's a very fast worker, he has good prices, and he speaks English, no more making pictures for every step of the process of building a very large website.

And if that isn't enough, he's a really nice guy, we have had him do four other small projects, as well as building the rainbow site right from the start.

My skills from the old days of owning the Canz Stock Photo Bank, are really helping me now, and the training of data entry staff, I did then, have proved invaluable for training staff now, to load all the listings into this new Tourism Site.

My arm is to sore to type anymore, it's been a hard month, See yah.

The owner of http://www.boxit.co.nz/ has been very impressed with the results of my SEO work,
so impressed, that she's decided to expand her business to the world market.
I advised her to buy some dot coms, and let them get into the search engines buy parking them over her orginal website.
This will get google looking though the site, and then her site will start to appear in world search engines, rather than mainly in New Zealand Search engines.

Helpful friends

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I thought I would relate a story, that I'm sure some of you could relate to.
Recently I was doing some SEO work, and a friend happen by, I said to her,if you wanted a website built what would you search for?.... she replied, I wouldn't search, I would just come and see you.
Now, I'm happy that she would come to me about a website, but god I could have strangled her, with friends like that it's any wonder I have to rely on forums to ask such questions....

Contacted by the owner of boxit.co.nz on 6th of Sept, to see what I could do for her website SEOwize. She hadn’t managed to find her site in the first 20 pages of any searches she made.

On the 8th of Sept I started working on the meta tags and title tags of the website, contrary to what people say Google does read and take notice of what meta tags say because by the 10th of September I noticed that her site was suddenly starting to show on page #at #1 and #2 for some keyphrases and on page #2 for many key phrases in google NZ.

By the next day when I finished working on the site I was noticing Nicky site showing on page 1 and 2 for all sorts of relevant key phrases. Like gift box, gift boxes , gift boxes nz, gift hampers nz
Will be interesting to see what happens within a week or two.

Exciting New Job for Gay Tourism Site

I have a new SEO job, which I really excited about. It's for a gay tourism site called Rainbow Tourism, it's a mature website, which is what I'm really excited about, I haven't worked on a mature site for a long time, except our own of course.

This site lists hotels, motels, everything from Luxury Lodges through Apartments and cottages, and then backpackers and camping grounds (which are extremely budget accomodation, 6-10 bunks per room)

The site has over 100 pages, mostly of places in NZ and Australia, and the accomodation that place has to offer. The owner has several domain names pointed at the site... when I say several, I mean about 30 or so that I have found so far, which is pretty impressive, gives me lot's of room for getting the site listed several times one after another in search engines, depending on what the page rank of that particular domain has.

Anyway, go take a look at the site for Gay and Lesbian friendly places to stay and if you do it soon, take a good look around, cause not only am I doing the SEO, but CanzDesign is redesigning the website, doing a new logo and other site graphics, building a cms, so we'll be busy campers for the next couple of months with the redesign, and a year with the SEO work.

I just started my paid submission to Linda.com and of course i started doing the SEO tutorials. I haven't learnt anything about SEo itself, but the tutor has some great tools he has found online for checking your SEO efforts.

I also wrote to the tutor, and advised him of one tool he didn't use which is a really good program, I think I have mentioned it before, but will again, it's the google free monitor, a neat little program that automatically searches google.com and tells you where your website is listed in google for the keywords/phrases you have optimised your website for.

The program is available at cleverstat.com they have a few other free programs that are worth having in your SEO arnsenal .

Getting Used to Vista, and work as Ususal

having just got a new computer, with vista on, I'm after what 5 days, just now getting all my emails, favourites, found a skin for maxthon I like, revisted sites I belong to and loggin in. I've changed browser 4 times, lost my email 2 and when I found it, it didn't install about 8 times... geeze what a pain.... anyway all is well now.

Worked on EmpressGems fixing up a few things, but really thats all I have done...

oh yeah, I did some work on Hobits Hints 

I also added the Southern Gothic to websites to The Directory Submission Place I added another $20 for CanzDesign as well, I really love that place, just add your websites details, pay the money, and then in a few days the emails start arriving, that your website has been submitted to some directory or other.... and the spam from the directory starts coming.....

Ok, gotta go and rest, been online for 18 hours.....

boring stuff i just want to record

My new computer which was supposed to arrive last week has been lost, they courier thinks it may be back where it started in Christchurch, but they aren't sure. So I'm hobbling along with this old one. They courier promise the computer will be here today.. huh... heard that one before.

The panda anti virus after being so good, is a royal pain in the arse, stopping email coming thorough, stopping the browser from working, general stopping all online activity, thats after working really well for 7 months.
I think this old one would be ok if it was reformatted, which Kym is going to do if and when the new baby ever turns up.

I have finished doing most of the work on the faceted gem website I'm having problems with that domain name, always calling it a .com rather than a .net better get my act together before I start doing the seo.
The owner of the site has decided to make it only faceted gems and jewelery and delete the rough gemstone. so after all that work of finding the size of each gem I had to delete them all... major groan, however the site is looking good.

I have built a website over the weekend the one above. I copied the database for another of our sites, and made a new website, with the old database,
I have since been though each and every gemstone about 10 times at least, and changed the descriptions and pricing. Changed the overall look of the site store.
The owner of the old site wanted another website to sell more expensive gems on, their original site is doing very very well, with over $1000 a week in sales, but they wanted something more classy, without losing their original website.

The front page is a whole new design, looks very cool huh.

I had been working on the site for less than 24 hours when I noticed that the google spiders were there, in 52 hours Google has visited almost 4000 times, and even msn and askjeeves has been been though a few times, there no stopping them spiders huh...

I just found out I have a button on my toolbar that lets me post straight to this blog, which means i don't have to go login, and make a post, I can click do it, and it's published....

I'm a happy camper, little things amuse even the most intelligent among us huh...

As I said in the last post, we shifted hobit and his hints to their own sub domain, I have add a heap of hints hobit has written in the past couple of months, so there will be 22 hints when the web designer goes though them and polishes them up, hobit can only write, he's not so good at using Photoshop, which I suppose if expected, there a lot of keyboard shortcuts and his claws go between the keys and get stuck. You can see his claws in the picture and imaging how difficult it is for him.

Oh thats cool to, you can just drag pictures off web pages and the insert themselves into the blog... I can see this blog is going to be used a lot more.... great stuff.

Been Busy SEO'ing

I have been very busy doing various SEO jobs for both our own site, www.canzdesign.com and a variety of websites I am SEO'ing at the moment.

One our own site, I have been writing various articles and adding them to the site, fixing up links within out site, and tweaking the meta tags of the site. I have also posting in several forums, and have written about 7 articles for Buzzle an article website. I'm about to start taking screen shots of our SEO friendly CMS, there's been a lot of interest from Artists and photographers wanting an easy way of displaying their images.

The other sites I do SEO work on, have been having great results,
www.gemhunters.com.au has yet again increased it's visitors by over 2000 a month, and sales are up, the owner is thrilled. It lost a PR point on Google a couple of rounds ago, but if getting far more hits, being found for far more different search keywords and key phrases, and with sales skyrocketing everyone is happy.

I'm still working on the www.peoplecoachingpeople.co.nz site , and am teaching it's owner to do her own optimization, she seems to be picking it up quickly.

www.buykiwimade.com has had a make-over in the past month, I got rid of the CMS that was there, and created a directory for NZ owned websites.

I'm also doing the SEO work on three other websites, that are about to be opened.

www. Aotea. net is a web hosting website one of 6 we have built for the same company is about to be my next SEO job.

That site is going to be a real challenge, since there are at least 10 other sites owned by the same person, that have the same content on them. Google hasn't banned the site, but it seems to have put the site onto some kind of bad list, and is only visiting the site about 30 times a month, a site that size should be having Google visit at least 500 times a month, even if the content doesn't change. Directory Submission

I found this site that enters your website into directory's for only 20 cents per submittion.

Thats a darn good price. All you do is add the website details into it, add 4 or so titles and discriptions, and pay them. They don't start immediately, it took them 4 days to start, I just noticed that I started getting emails from directories saying thank you for your submittion.

I'm going to do must of my sites thru there I think, they will be offering a service soon that will submit sites to sites that are directly related to your site.... which will be great.

Re: Zillions of $$ from google adwords

Hello Lynn,

I read your email with a lot of interest. I haven't read the pdf, so my
comments may be off the mark.

What you say confirms my previous inkling that to make good money with
AdSense you need a LOT of keyword rich, good quality content. Having each page target a keyphrase or two with anchor text to other internal pages makes good sense and is what we do for our main content pages and recommend to others.

Outsource directory submission (50 per week): Who can you outsource to that will do a decent job of varying anchor text. Most directories are tiny with tiny PR. If you outsource, I'm sceptical about getting a ROI.

Make your next 6 page website on a different topic: How many topics can we be an expert in? And if the topics are related, why not subdomains on one main domain. This has the advantage for Google of looking like it's growing, and overall size.

Then link to the site from your main money making site: If this is to gain PR, Google can tell who owns domains and devalues interlinking between domains owned by same owner.

Add another page per week and make another website per week: How may hours in a day and how many areas of expertise do you/we have?

The better the page rank of the page the ad appears on, the more you get paid to have advertisements on those pages: This might explain why our AdSense income is going up while we are taking AdSense of our main pages. Add more backlinks to each site, by article submission, and other ways you know about: How many hours in a day? If you outsource this, will you get a ROI?

You could knock out one site a week for 10 weeks or so: There's not just the typing. There's the keyword analysis, thinking up good content, massaging it into good copy whilst being mindful of keywords. And what about the web design. Sure, you can use a simple template, but will this do to get quality incoming links?

I agree with you that domain registration/webhosting/ISP costs are minimal. That's what's so great about an internet business. Outsourcing the link building he quotes at $150 per site: What kind of link building? Reciprocal links from quality sites or submitting to twenty zillion tin potty little directories? I can't see you getting anything of real links value at $150. 500 links for $99 - that's 20 cents per link. What kind of links would they be? If they are of any value, I'd gladly pay $99.

$3600 earnings per website per year, x 48 websites = $172,800 per year, - 7200 for outsourcing = $165,600 profit. Net profit is income minus all expenses: webhosting/ ISP/ office/ webdesign/ accounting/ legal/ marketing. And if the owner pays themselves a salary for all of their time, what exactly is left?

Doing a sanity check using our own situation, our site is 3.5 years old with approx 330 pages. We have PR=5 and have AdSense adverts on almost all of our 150 article pages (PR=2). Yes, most are duplicates, but we also had adverts on our unique content pages (PR=3). We also do lots of eZine articles, forum posts and reciprocal links. We get approx $500 per year. This is very
different from $3,600 year - and after all of that hard work. You could say that our article AdSense pages are neither keyword targeted nor unique. Yes, but our content pages were (totalling at least 20 pages), and we still didn' t make that kind of money. One question is: Just how many pages do you need at what PR to make $3,600 per year?

"Makes me think about buying a cheap domain name, one that's keyword heavy, even if it is a long one, and try it out." If we had the time, we would join you. I'd be really interested in seeing how you go.

With the guy that has no less than 10 websites all with the same content, just the titles and metatags are different, it's not one step away from duplicate content, it IS duplicate content. He won't get banned; it's just that the later in time duplicate pages won't show up in the SERPs. Same with our articles written by other consultants - the older original articles will show up instead of our article pages. That's OK because these pages are not designed to get high PR. They serve other purposes.

This may be the way some people can offer 2000 directory submissions for $100: Aren't these just auto submissions at that price?

I've also been thinking about directories, and how to make duplicate directories: I'm sorry I couldn't follow what you were saying on this one, Lynn.

With Google AdSense, I think I agree with you that making a lot of money can be done. I'd like to see an example of some urls and some detailed accounting figures. I just have difficulty seeing how you can get high PR over a sufficient number of pages to get that kind of money.

We get reciprocal invites from sites that are, as they say, "built for AdSense". They mostly come through LinkMarket and from people with SiteBuildIt CMS sites. When I look at them, I see a minimum of content and so obviously built just for the advertising. The sites look crap and I
reject the offer because they would be of so little value to our web visitors. I'm sure there must be better AdSense sites than these.

Some closing comments: Even if we were able make over $100,000 with AdSense, it is another question whether we would want to go down that track. One consideration is the market risk. Making AdSense bring in loads of money would probably entail backing off our own business. This puts more of the business risk into AdSense. PPC costs to advertisers are going up along with greater disillusionment over click fraud. If the PPC market goes belly up, your income would go belly down. If you have your own products and services, no one can take these away from you. If one media (e.g., the internet) goes under, you could still pursue your market through other media/means. The risk is less than putting all your eggs in the AdSense basket.

The second consideration is personal interest and meaning of life. Sure, with AdSense you write content on subjects you are interested in. Assuming you have enough expertise to go around a number of subjects, will this be personally fulfilling enough? We get enormous satisfaction in producing new products and building our own unique brand. To become simply a portal for
Google does not fill either Les or I with an inner glow. These observations are, of course, personal, and everyone will be different - in how they manage business risk and in their personal drivers.

If there was a not too difficult way to make an income from AdSense, we'd be the first to look at the details closely. We're making approx USD $40 per month. This could certainly do with improvement.

Zillions of $$ from google adwords

Hi Vicki.

I found a pdf online the other day, and eventually read it, it contained the formula for making a lot of money out of websites by having adsence on the site. It made pretty good sense to me, so I thought I would run it past you.

The basic idea, is to create a small website, that wasn't selling anything, just giving good advice on any given subject. Build a home page and say 5 more pages, with relevant information. Say the site is about SEO, and each page is about a specific keyword or key phrase to do with SEO, say one way backlinks, reciprocal links, linking text, search engine submission, and sigs on forum posts. Each page is linked to from the home page using anchor text from the home page article, then link each page first to second, second to third again using anchor text. .

The he recons outsource the job of submitting the home page to directory's, using good keyword based text links not more than 50 sites per week. meanwhile making your next 6 page website. On a different topics as long as the sites are informational and not selling anything.

Since the sites don't have any outbound links, they don't lose anything to other sites. Then link to the site from your main money making site. Once your site starts getting index, add another page at the rate of one page per week. (google see's there's changes which is good) once your PR starts to climb, then add google adsence to the pages, still keep the outsourcer adding your site to fifty directory's per week, and add another page per week. And make another website per week.

This guy says that the better the page rank of the page the ad appears on, the more you get paid to have advertisements on those pages...which makes sense.

He suggest you slip the adsence into your content rather than have it at the end of your page. And continue adding more backlinks to each site, by article submission, and other ways you know about, he again suggests you outsource this work, basically you keep making a new site each week, and adding one page to each site you have already built.

Realistically this would be a LOT of typing, but if you were writing about subjects you were particularly interested in, You could knock out one site a week for 10 weeks or so, and how much would it cost, the cheapest global domain names I have seen are $5USD. Say you made 20 sites in a year, that would be what $100 in domain names, hosting, well we can have as many
domains as we want, so that doesn't count, but renting a reseller domain costs sweet stuff all a month, and outsourcing the link building he quotes at $150 per site, $3000 per year, personally I think it would be more than that, the cheapest i have heard of, apart from the meat market, if .60 UScents per link, oh, thats right, there's one place that offer's 500 links for $250.
But this dude recons that within a year, the sites would be earning $10 per day per website, because of the high page rank of all the pages.

His figures were, $3600 earnings per website per year, x 48 websites = $172,800 per year, - 7200 for outsourcing = $165,600 profit.

I could possibly see how it could work, if you had nothing else to do but write content, and had a few grand around to pay an outsourcing place. It sounds good anyway....

Thinking as I do, I thought about the potential backlinks to the main site that could be gained once there pr had built up, and if instead of buying domain names, you were to make sub-domains with relevant names for the topic of these mini-site, as long as the main website name was also relevant. What I got from the articles was the sites should not be trying to sell
anything, but be purely informational, no fancy graphics, just good old well SEO'ed html pages.
It makes me wonder how fast a new domain could potentially build up page rank, using his idea. Makes me think about buying a cheap domain name, one thats keyword heavy, even if it is a long one, and try it out. I have witnessed, a pr3 in 5 months, with very little SEO work done.

With your site, I wonder if you had a subdomain with your articles on it, you have on the main site, if that would count as duplicate content. Would probably be best to have another domain name, possibly on a different server, I have to wonder about duplicate content, this dude, I'm doing the seo work for, had no less than 10 websites all with the same content, just the titles and metatags are different. And all his sites have a pr of 2 or 3. I guess it's one step away from duplicate content.

I've also been thinking about directories, and how to make duplicate directories. And how this may be the way some people can offer 2000 directory submissions for $100. If you had a domain name with say 20 subdomain names, and had a database driven directory, you could link each directory to the one database. So a link added on one directory would appear
all to sites in one hit. If you had a couple of hundred sub-domains, it could work the same, and since some database driven sites are massive, with huge numbers of people using them at once, think of some of the massive forums, and how many visitors are on one topic at a time. So it could be done, and if there were a few non database driven webpages on each site, to the content was somewhat different. It wouldn't take long to add links to 2000 directory's. If the directories ever became popular to actual people, rather than just search engines, you might have to make more than one database, but still.

Oh, if I could get a job, where all I had to do was think or research ideas, and someone else do the grunt work.....

Why the text in a link is important

You have all heard about getting backlinks to your site right? And how important they are correct? Well here's a well known way to double the impact of backlinks. Instead of making a linking something like www.canzdesign.com like you usually do, make the linking words, use your websites keywords into a link, eg Best SEO Company in NZ if you click on either link, they will both go to the same place, but unless someone knows the name of your site already, in which case they probably wouldn't be searching for it, so they would or may be searching, in this case, for Best SEO in NZ. Google and most other Search Engines take special note of this linking text, even more than the title and meta tags or content on the page. For proof of what I say try doing a search for "click here" you will find the adobe pdf reader is the #1 ranking in google, and yet on the page itself, or in the title or meta tags, you won't find any mention of the words "click here". But think of all the websites you have been to that have a pdf, and tell you to "click here" to download the pdf reader. Using a bit of lateral thinking, you can see how a linking campaign using many different combinations of your main keywords, could make your site show highly in Search Engines for many many different keywords or keyphases, as I prefer to call them. I think I have worked out how to make multiple directories.

I was just burbling away on my other blog, wondering how people could get banned for having too many backlinks to quickly, and I think I might know how or why.

If you were uncouth and into blackhat SEO have a directory database, and linked to the same database for several directory's then linked each directory to each other from a none database webpage. You could probably build up pagerank quite well correct?
Then is you entered new links into the database it would show up on several "different sites" in a matter of seconds. Do this say 300 domain names, and each domain name have say 10 subdomains, you'd have 3,000 websites.
I mean even if you had 300 databases just servicing their own subdomains, it still would be possible to add a new link to all 300 databases in a few hours. Result, would be 3,000 new links to your site in one day. If you sold that service, to even only $300 per sucker, (tell them it would take 30 days to do all those submittions), you'd only need what 20 suckers, to cover costs, and make a profit, it would probably be a couple of months before google caught on and banned your site. Then you could sell the domain names off cheap on ebay or something.

I wonder how long it would take for google to catch on, to get your pagerank up, you would need to add some content that was sort of unique, but hell you can buy content for 5 cents per page and if you that unclouth, you'd probably steal it anyway.....

Make you wonder if it could work huh, the databases would probably be slow, if you linked to them from too many sites, but you only want google to spider them anyway. Or would you.... you'd probably be gone before any of your poor suckers caught on.

I have been reading about all sorts of sleezy tricks people are doing to up ther page rank. I think my idea, is actually just pie in the sky and wouldn't work, but hell I exercised my brain, and had good fun, so what the hell.

Making Google Sitemaps

Hi there, I lost this blog until today.

I have been creating google .xml sitemaps this morning, for NZ's Best SEO NZ Islands Webhosting and NZ Business Webhosting pleased with myself, them all working, I just added more links to the canzdesign one, and waiting for it to be oked..... waiting waiting.... I'm going to do a sitemape for the Life Coach Directory NZ website when I wake up again, it's almost 9am and really should go to bed.
